Common Auto Repair Scams and Rip Offs

Auto repair scams and a dishonest auto repair shop are so easy to find.

First a few facts I dug up about auto repair rip-offs.

The Consumer Federation of America states, auto repair rip-offs are consistently one of the top five most
frequently reported consumer complaints. National figures indicate $20 billion is spent annually on unnecessary or faulty auto repairs.

The California Bureau of Automotive Repair receives around 25,000 auto repair complaints a year.

With that said, I have personally seen so many different ways to rip people off in the auto repair business that it is hard to pick out the most common scams because each auto repair shop has its favorite.

So I will concentrate on the most common scams and rip offs that I have seen and heard about in my 23-year career as a certified master technician in the automotive service retail business.

To get started on the most common scams we have to talk about a few different rip offs as related to the common brake job. Brake job scams are so popular that whole franchise businesses have been built around them and specialize in just doing brake jobs.

These companies have recognized the pure profit potential from performing brake service. Auto repair Brake scams are easily sold to the UN educated consumer do to the safety factors involved.
We all no the importance of being able to stop the vehicle in emergency situation.
Once again the auto repair shop uses this to their advantage and sells you unneeded services in the name of safety.

The most offten used brake service scam is the complete brake system overhaul. I will use a specific example to show you how this works. You go into a auto repair chain store to have your brakes checked. Maybe you heard some brake squeal or brake noise that concerned you.

So you bring your 1999 Chevy blazer that has 75,000 miles on it to an auto repair shop to have the brakes checked. The shop could do a standard brake job or a hang and turn as we call it. A hang and turn is replacing the brake pads and resurfacing the rotors. This service would retail for around $110.00 but the
auto repair shop would prefer to make more. So they recommend a brake system overhaul.

The brake system overhaul will mean different things to different auto repair shops. In most cases they are
talking about overhauling the brake calipers by replacing the seals in the calipers.

A caliper seal kit is very cheap in parts cost and very high in labor costs. The seal kit usually has about 3 or 4 rubber seals in it and cost the shop about $3.00
They then charge you $20.00 for the kit and another 2.0 hours per caliper to install the seals. But here is the scam part.

The caliper seals are internal and its hard to verify that they were actually replaced. The outer seal known as the dust seal is usually the only seal that will get replaced during this unneeded service.

The mechanic then throws away the remainder of the brand new seals. The shop usually includes a brake system flush in this service, which I will attack in a moment.

The first auto repair issue to address is do we really need a caliper overhaul. In most cases no we dont. Why is this true? The manufacturers make fantastic calipers from the factory. The reason being it is an extremely important safety related part.

The manufacture must be sure their vehicle meets stopping distance requirements. They must also be sure that the calipers are over engineered to last for the life of the vehicle. The manufacture cannot afford to go to court for lawsuits on brake system failures.

Now with this being said do calipers ever need to be overhauled? Yes on rare cases this is the case. But
there are warning signs that the service is required. The Number one sign that a caliper is failing is a
strong brake pull.

To explain, this is when the vehicle pulls right or left during braking only.
The harder you brake the harder it pulls to one side. This is because a caliper is binding on one side or the
other. Equal braking force is not be applied. Tell tale sign # 2 is if the red brake warning light is illuminated on the dash. This can indicate the brake fluid is low and may be caused by a brake fluid leak from a caliper.
In any case the way the caliper service should be addressed by the auto repair shop is to replace both front calipers at the same time. I do not trust the individual mechanic to overhaul my calipers.
I would rather replace both front calipers with either new or remanufactured calipers.

This way you are assured you have reliable calipers installed. Some remanufactured calipers come loaded with new brake pads and now you have new calipers and brake pads that the auto repair mechanic can just bolt on.
This requires very little skill from the mechanic and makes for a very reliable auto repair.
Most auto repair shops will do this if requested. If they are not willing to do the repair the right way this should raise a red flag in your mind and moving the vehicle to another shop would be best. Remember That an educated consumer is the auto repair shops worst nightmare.

Car Specifications

This mostly applies to American made vehicles. Once again check your warranty and owner’s manual for details and dont be afraid to ask questions.

The things you should have when calling repair shops are the year, make, model and engine size. When calling about tires, check your owner’s manual for your specific tire size. Some times this can be located on the inside drivers door. Repair shops need this information to give you some type of estimate over the phone. Remember every car and truck have different prices on parts and labor. Dont forget to ask what their shop hourly rates are.

Tune-ups in my opinion are either minor or major. Minor tunes up on today’s cars are basically just spark plugs replacement. The reason I say that is, most of the newer cars, idle speeds and timing are computer controlled. There are no adjustments needed. So if you are having a problem such as missing, hesitating, stalling, and hard to start, ninety percent of the time a tune up wont help it. Now if you are having any of these problems ask for a diagnosis first and find out what the problem really is and get an estimate. A major tune-up is one that will cost you more money and you will need to determine if you are going to keep the car another 100,00 miles.

I will go a little deeper in my future posts. Happy Driving!

Porsche 1974 75 Wheel Alignment Guide

PORSCHE 1974-75 MODELS SPECIFICATIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS

TIRE INFLATION (COLD)
Before attempting to check or adjust wheel alignment, make sure tires are properly inflated. Refer to manufacturers specifications given in owners manual.

RIDING HEIGHT
NOTE - Riding height should be set with full tank of gasoline and spare tire included.
All Models (Front) - Checking or adjusting riding height can only be performed with vehicle on level surface. Mark center of front wheel hub cap (grease retainer cup). Bounce vehicle several times to settle suspension. Measuring distance "a" as shown in illustration then measure distance "b". Difference between "a" and "b" should be to specifications. If necessary to adjust, loosen or tighten torsion bar adjusting bolt until correct height is obtained. Bounce vehicle several times and recheck height. NOTE - Difference between right and left measurement must not exceed .20".
1 - Measurement is expressed as difference between "a" and "b".

FRONT RIDING HEIGHT DIMENSIONS

911 Series (Rear) - Checking or adjusting riding height can only be performed with vehicle on level surface. Mark center of rear wheel. Bounce vehicle several times to settle suspension. Measure distance "a" as shown in illustration. Distance "a" plus .468" equals "b"; however, distance "b" is difficult to measure because the torsion bar is mounted off center in its rubber bushing. Therefore, it is necessary to measure distance "b1" and add .585" (radius of bushing). This total should be equal to "b". After calculating "b". difference between "a" and "b" should be .468±20". Difference in height from left to right should not exceed .197". If values are not within specifications, check front height and rear torsion bar adjusted. Correct as required.
REAR AXLE RIDING HEIGHT DIMENSIONS

CASTER
All Models - If caster angle is not to specifications, it will be necessary to move adjuster plate which attaches to front shock absorber. Remove enough front compartment carpet to allow access to top of each shock absorber. Mark position of each movable plate, located below each Allen screw. Loosen each screw and upper shock absorber nut. Move assembly lengthwise to obtain correct caster angle. Tighten all three screws and shock absorber nut. NOTE - Movement of adjuster plate frome side to side will affect camber angle.

CAMBER
All Models (Front) - If camber angle is not to specifications, it will be necessary to move adjuster plate which attaches to front shock absorber. Remove enough front compartment carpet to allow access to top of each shock absorber. Mark position of each movable plate, located below each Allen screw. Loosen each screw and upper shock absorber nut. Move assembly from side to side to obtain correct camber angle. Tighten all three screws and shock absorber nut. NOTE - Movement of adjuster plates in lengthwise direction will affect caster angle
911 Series (Rear) - Mandatory prerequisite, for obtaining permissible camber values at rear wheels, is proper adjustment of rear torsion bars. See Torsion Bar Adjustment. Loosen nuts on retaining both and nuts on eccentric bolt at rear axle flange. Turn camber eccentric until camber angle is within specifications. Tighten retaining nuts and eccentric bolt nuts.
REAR WHEEL ADJUSTMENT POINTS (911 SERIES)

914 Series (Rear) - Mark position of rear axle control arm on base plate, then rmeove center bolt attaching base plate to body and loosen remaining base plate attaching bolts. To adjust camber, add or remove shims between base plate and body. Shims are available in the following thicknesses: .079" (2mm), .118" (3mm) and .157" (4mm). NOTE - Each .039" (1mm) increment will change camber angle approximately 2/3 /6 degrees. With camber set to specifications, install center attaching bolt and tighten all bolts.

TOE-IN
NOTE - All toe-in specifications are given in degrees.

All Models (Front) - Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Adjust left and right steering links (tie rods) equally to obtain specified setting. Coat each steering link with anti corrosive compound after adjustment.
911 Series (Rear) - To adjust rear wheel toe-in, loosen nuts on retaining bolts and adjusting eccentrics at rear axle flange. Turn toe-in eccentric until toe-in is set to specifications. Hold eccentric stationary and tighten all lock nuts.
914 Series (Rear) - To adjust rear wheel toe-in, loosen retaining bolts of rear axle control arm base plate. Move control arm pivot bracket backward or forward until toe-in is within specifications. Tighten retaining bolts and recheck toe-in setting.

TORSION BAR ADJUSTMENT
911 Series (Rear) - Place torsion bar into trasverse tube with inner end splines first. Slip radius arm onto outer end splines of torsion bar. Place suitable leveling tool (VW 261) on lower edge of door opening and adjust level so bubble is in center of glass. Check adjustment (degrees) of free hanging radius arm with same leveling tool. If not to specifications, adjust by turning torsion bar and radius arm in opposite directions. Adjustment of both radius arms must each equal to 36°45±15.

1974 Porsche Models
1 - Maximum deviations left to right is ¼°.
2 - Maximum deviation left to right is 1/3°.
3 - Per wheel.

Springtime is here again and its time for that maintenance inspection under the hood of your car or truck to be performed. A car engine is something anyone can do a quick inspection to see what the winter months have created for him or her to fix now that it is spring. If you are not too familiar with what to look for then that is why I am here to help you. I have over 25 years experience as an ASE certified automotive technician and I enjoy helping people with their cars or trucks. Here are a few of the major maintenance items to check under the hood of your car or truck.

Four Key Inspection Items Under The Hood:

1. Upper and Lower Radiator Hoses: Inspect the 2 hoses for any bulging, leaking of antifreeze, loose hose clamps, or any irregular wear from rubbing against something.

2. Serpentine Belt or V-Belts: Inspect your belts for excessive cracking or looseness. With the car engine off reach down and check the tension of these automotive belts. They should be very snug and tight with not much side-to-side motion.

3. Check all Fluid Levels: Of course, this means checking your oil level, transmission fluid, brake fluid level, antifreeze overflow tank level, and your power steering fluid level. Take note of how contaminated these fluids maybe and decide if its time to flush them all out with new fluids.

4. Under the Hood Engine Leaks: Check for any kind of leaks that was not there during your Fall Inspection. Green or reddish would be antifreeze, Dark and sticky would be engine oil, Red and sticky would be transmission fluid, Watery and sticky would be brake fluid, Water drops would be your air conditioner moisture, which is normal to be dropping on the road.

I hope this Spring Time maintenance inspection under the hood of your car or truck will help you to be safe out there on the roads and maybe help you understand a little bit about cars. I did forget to mention you might want to wear some coveralls because you will get dirty performing this under the hood maintenance inspection for the spring. MEASURING AXLE SHAFT DEFLECTION
4) Rear axle bearing should be replaced when bearing noise is detected, when bearing axial free play exceeds .014-.016" (.36-.41mm) or if bearing radial free play exceeds .001-.002" (.03-.04 mm) at approximately 11 lbs. (5.0 kg) measuring force.
5) Inspect wheel hub bolts for tightness and bearing outer retainer for deformation, replace defective parts as necessary.

Installation - 1) Fit outer bearing retainer flat side against shaft splined end, then install bearing and inner bearing retainer. Seat bearing retainer with smaller chamfered side directed to the bearing NOTE - Ensure bearing is completely seated.
2) Lightly coat lips of oil seal and using suitable oil seal installer (DT-1007B and CT-1008) fit axle shaft oil seal in rear axle housing.
3) Using packings and shims in proper sequence, set clearance between bearing and outer bearing retainer to .00-.01" (.0-.25 mm).
REAR AXLE SHAFT COMPONENTS
4) Carefully insert axle shaft assembly into axle housing using care not to damage seal. Slightly turn axle shaft until splines line up with differential side gears. Align packing oil holes with outer bearing retainer and tighten bearing retainer to axle housing flange. Connect brake line to wheel cylinder and bleed air from system.

DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER
Removal - Drain oil from rear axle differential housing, then disconnect propeller shaft. Pull out both rear axle shafts approximately 2 1/2". Remove differential gear housing mounting nuts and withdraw the differential gear carrier. It may be necessary to top outside of housing to break gear carrier loose.

REMOVING DIFFERENTIAL GEAR HOUSING
Installation - Lightly coat each bearing and gear with oil. Apply sealing compound on packing and axle housing seat, then assemble gear carrier to axle housing with nuts and tighten. Fill differential gear housing with .96 quart of suitable multi-purpose gear oil (API GL-5)

OVERHAUL
Differential Gear Assembly - 1) Remove bearing carrier cap and lever gear case assembly from housing. Using suitable bearing puller tool (C-293-P and C-293-39) pull differential side bearing. Keep right and left bearings and shims in sequence for reassembly.
REMOVING DRIVE PINION BEARING
2) Remove ring gear lock plate tabs and loosen bolts in diagonal sequence, then remove ring gear. Drive out pinion shaft lock pin from ring gear back side using a punch; pull out pinion shaft and pinion. Pinion side gears and spacers are now accessible. Note placement of pinion side gear and spacers and ensure they are reassembled in some position.

Drive Pinion Disassembly - 1) Hold end yoke with suitable tool (C-3281) and remove lock nut, then remove end yoke. Using a wheel puller, force out drive pinion with adjusting shim, rear inner bearing race, spacer and preload adjusting shim.
REMOVING DIFFERENTIAL
PINION SIDE BEARINGS
2) With suitable bearing puller (C-293-P & C-293-39) remove rear bearing inner race and at same time, pull of drive pinion adjusting shim. Using suitable drift, remove front drive pinion bearing outer race and oil seal. Repeat some procedure to remove bearing outer race.

INSPECTION
Check differential gears for correct tooth contact and replace gears of wear is excessive. Inspect bearing faces for roughness or score marks and replace, if necessary, bearing assembly. Ensure splines of side gears and rear axle shafts fit correctly. Check clearance between pinion gears and pinion shaft, if wear is excessive, replace components.
REMOVING FRONT DRIVE PINION OUTER RACE
NOTE - To check gear tooth contact using point impression method, refer to beginning of this section.
COLT SEPARATE HOUSING REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY

REASSEMBLY AND ADJUSTMENT
CHECKING PINION & SIDE GEAR
BACKLASH
Case Assembly - 1) Install thrust washers (spacers) behind side gears in their original position and assemble pinion and side gears in differential. Insert both pinion gears, with pinion washers attached, so they mesh with side gears. It may be necessary to slightly rotate pinion to achieve desired meshing. Insert drive pinion shaft.
2) Check pinion and side gear backlash as shown in illustration. If backlash is beyond 0-.003" (0-.08 mm) adjust by selecting a side gear thrust washer (spacer) of correct size. If backlash is to be adjusted, ensure right and left sides are equally shimmed.
3) Thoroughly clean all dirt from ring gear mounting surface of differential case. Install bolts and lock washers. Tighten bolts alternately in a diagonal sequence and bend over lock tabs. Ensure lock washers are in contact with case rib after final torque has been performed.

Drive Pinion - Using a suitable drift and hammer or a press, seat front and rear bearing outer races into gear carrier ensuring that outer races do not cock. Ensure bearing races are completely seated before proceeding. Install shim between drive pinion and rear bearing. Using suitable bearing installer (CT-1075) press bearing onto drive pinion shaft. If drive pinion and bearing are scheduled to be reused, shims should be replaced with new ones of some thickness. In instances where the gear set is to be replaced, install new shims that are the same thickness as the used shims on drive pinion. NOTE - When determining the desired thickness of shim pack, amount of compression (sinkage) of shim pack and wear of the bearing (where old bearing is reused) must be taken into consideration.

Drive Pinion Depth - Install drive pinion spacer, front bearing, washer, end yoke and waher in order of removal. Fit pinion shaft retaining nut and slowly tighten nut, continuously checking, until pinion bearing preload is 6-9 INCH lbs. (7-10 cmkg) with oil seal not installed. Place suitable cylinder gauge on inside bearing pedestals of gear carrier housing. Place a black gauge on top end of drive pinion and slip a feeler gauge between the two gauges to obtain the correct clearance. The clearance between gauges should be .0118" (.300 mm). This is the standard height and any deviation from this height will be marked on the head of the pinion shaft and side of ring gear. To calculate the correct pinion height, add or subtract the variation value from the standard height. NOTE - Stamped values are in hudredth millimeters. Add or subtract the correct amount of shims as necessary.

Pinion Bearing Preload - This adjustment must be performed after the setting of the drive pinion depth. Remove end yoke and insert the bearing preload adjusting shim between pinion spacer and bearing, then tighten end yoke to 9-11 INCH lbs. (10-13 cmkg). In addition to the preload adjusting shims there are spacers available to provide proper adjustment. After finishing adjustment of drive pinion bearing preload remove the end yoke and apply a thin coat of grease to outer surface of oil seal, then drive seal into position in gear carrier. After greasing oil seal lip, insert end yoke and tighten nut.

Side Bearing Preload - Fit each side bearing into differential case leaving shims out; use suitable tool (CT-1102) for this procedure. Ensure side bearing are completely seated before proceeding. Install differential case assembly on gear carrier, then calculate the clearance between side bearing outer race and gear carrier as shown in illustration. After obtaining clearance add .002" (.05 mm) preload figure to each side, Insert shims equally on both sides. Align gear carrier and bearing cap index marks, then tighten cap retaining bolts.

MEASURING CLEARANCE BETWEEN SIDE
BEARING AND GEAR CARRIER
Ring Gear Deflection - Attach a dial indicator to back side of ring gear and measure deflection. If ring gear has excessive deflection, correct position of the assembly in relation to differential case and again perform measurement. Replace ring gear or differential case as necessary.

Drive Pinion Backlash - Measure backlash of drive pinion in at least for different spots on ring gear with drive pinion securely fixed in final position. Set up a dial indicator on ring ring gear teeth edges. If measured backlash is greater than .005" to .007" (.13-.18 mm), shift shims from ring gear side to back of the ring gear to obtain proper backlash. If the measure value is less than standard value, reverse the moving of shims as stated above. Side bearing shims are available in various thicknesses.
NOTE - Check gear tooth contact using point impression method described to beginning of this section.

Final Inspection and Assembly - Ligthtly coat each gear and bearing before and during reassembly  with gear oil. After installing each component, ensure oil rotating parts are free to move smoothly. Install differential gear assembly to axle housing after applying sealing agent and tighten gear carrier mounting nuts in diagonal sequence.
